Kenya: Drought Prevention And Reforestation
With only 7% tree cover, Kenya is the least forested country in Africa. Due to illegal activities such as unlicensed charcoal production which took place between the 1960s and 1990s, there are many areas of degraded land across Kenya which never regenerated after such extreme deforestation took place.
The deforestation has caused severe drought and poverty across the country, and will need years of replanting efforts to restore.
The projects we support have transformed many of these areas; through determination and relentless hard work across the Kijabe Forest and Lamu County, over 37 million trees have been planted in Kenya by our tree-planting partners.
Real, tangible change is happening thanks to the trees you plant, including jobs for local workers, re-established water supplies across drought-affected areas, critical habitat restoration and securing livelihoods across Kenya.
This project is:
Providing employment to people living in extreme poverty
Re-establishing water supplies in drought-affected areas
Reversing the effects of illegal deforestation due to charcoal logging
Restoring the habitats of native species
